THE TRUTH ABOUT THE SECOND BLESSING
(The so-called "Eradication" of the Old Nature)
by Dr. Michael E. Todd

Dear Friend,
This is a compassionate plea to try to help people understand what the Bible says about the old and new natures and what is called, "The Second Blessing."

Sadly, many good Christians end up frustrated and giving up in their spiritual lives because of a misunderstanding of this subject.

When a person is saved he receives what is called, "The New Nature" (Christ in you). I John 4:13. The Spirit of Christ comes in to dwell in our bodies. Of course the new nature CANNOT SIN, however the old nature can do nothing but sin.

REMEMBER! The new Nature CANNOT SIN. The Old Nature is TOTALLY SINFUL

POINT #1

The common teaching today is that a person can receive a "second work of grace" and therefore his old nature is eradicated (i.e. ceases to exist).

POINT #2

It is also taught that a person that has received this second work of grace (i.e. eradication of the old nature) can still backslide. If he does not repent, he will go to hell.

NOW LET US CAREFULLY EXAMINE POINTS #1 & #2.

POINT #1

The Old Nature can be eradicated. This means that he has No Sinful Nature.

POINT #2

A person can backslide and go to hell because of sin.

THESE TWO VIEWPOINTS TOTALLY OPPOSE EACH OTHER!

Friend, if your old nature was gone, then you would NEVER have to worry about backsliding. WHY? Because you could not sin. The new nature can only please God and cannot sin.

AN IMPORTANT QUESTION?

If a person has only the new nature, he can never backslide. BUT, it is a known fact that many of those who have claimed the "second work of grace," have not only backslidden, but are not even in church anymore.

WHY???

The ONLY explanation is that the old nature CANNOT BE ERADICATED!

The Christian finds to his frustration that in certain areas of his life there is no victory. He may go for years trying to excuse or cover up the problem. He may feel embarrassed and try even harder, but still realizes that something is wrong. He may see others in church that claim to have the "second blessing." and not realize that they also could be having the same problems, but are too embarrassed or afraid to admit it. As time goes on he becomes so frustrated that he may give up and quit altogether.

IF THERE IS NO OLD NATURE - THEN NO SIN; IF NO SIN - THEN NO DEATH

(The wages of sin is death) Rom. 6:23 .

Yet, we ALL know that EVERYONE DIES; Yes. even those who claim "the second blessing."

THE CHRISTIAN HOWEVER HAS BOTH NATURES.

And will always have the old nature to deal with until God takes him home. God would not tell a Christian to walk in the Spirit if it was not possible to walk after the flesh.

"Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are CONTRARY the one to the other." (Gal. 5:16-17).

REMEMBER! THE BIBLE DOES NOT TEACH ERADICATION OF THE OLD NATURE!

There will be a continual battle between the old and new natures as long as the Christian lives. But the Christian can have victory.
